Dennis the Menace is a cartoon with an “all-American family” feel to it. The animated series, which debuted in 1986, is based off of the illustrated comics created by Hank Ketcham. The main character is Dennis, a “five-an-a-half” year old boy who has a knack for getting into trouble.

While his intentions are always good, Dennis and his friends find a way of making a mess out of almost anything they do, much to the dismay of Dennis’ neighbor “Mr. Wilson”.

Throughout the series, there are two lines that are unmistakably the most well-known characteristics of the series; Dennis, yelling “Oh, Mr. Wiiiilsooooon!”, and the sound of the grumpy Mr. Wilson yelling “Dennis!”. While rough at the surface, avid D.T.M. lovers know that Mr. Wilson really does care for his adventurous young neighbor, and is much like a surrogate grandfather to him (at the insistence of Mrs. Wilson).

The other main characters of the series are the ever-loyal Ruff (Dennis’ big scruffy dog), Margaret (a bossy redhead prima donna), Gina, Tommy, PeeBee, and Jay. Dennis’ parents also appear frequently throughout the series, and are portrayed much like an animated version of the Cleavers.
