Ted Turner came up with the idea for an environmentalist cartoon and soon Captain Planet and the Planeteers was born. With 113 episodes and running from 1990 to 1995 Captain Planet and the Planeteers was the second longest series during the 1990’s cartoon craze.
Hanna-Barbera Products actually co-produced the sequel to the show which was called The New Adventures of Captain Planet. This series ran from 1993 to 1993 and even had a video game for the Nintendo Entertainment System made for it.
The overall plot to Captain Planet and the Planeteers is a team of kids each with their own individual powers fighting off various foes that are polluting the planet. Earth, Wind, Water, Fire and Heart are the powers bestowed upon the kids that are kept inside magic rings.
Once the rings are put together and the powers called out Captain Planet appears and this usually marks the end of an episode. Captain Planet himself is made up of the different powers and his actual color is said to draw from that, an example meaning his hair is green because of the earth power.
