The Berenstain Bears is an animated television series that was based on the children’s book series written by Stan and Jan Berenstain.
This popular cartoon show was produced first in 1985, and then again in 2003 – 2005 for the PBS Kids Channel. The show was made up of 80 15 minute episodes. Nearly all of the books got their own episode, but not every episode was based on the books.
The Berenstains consisted of Papa Bear, Mama Bear, Brother Bear, Sister Bear, and the baby, Honey Bear. The 1985 series drew some complaints about Papa Bear being somewhat antagonistic and not a very effective parent figure.
With the introduction of the newer series, Papa Bear had transformed into a much better father figure to the children, and a better husband for Mama Bear.
The Berenstain Bears also were the subject of several televised holiday specials each year from 1979 – 1983 prior to the beginning of their very own television series. Even today, the family of the Berenstain Bears enjoy popularity from the sale their books and DVDs. The television series is still aired internationally and the message this show delivers is still considered to be one that children need to hear.
